Theorem Proving in the AI Age

Scott Wesley · Thursday, October 8, 2026

Automated theorem proving has long been a goal of mathematicians and AI researchers alike. Historically, this has followed a lineage of logical deduction and computer verified proof. However, with the advent of generative pre-trained transformations (GPTs), the game has radically changed. The first half of this talk will provide a brief history of automated theorem proving and its fundamental limitations. Some time will be spent surveying theorems recently proven by GPTs, the implications of these results, and the surrounding controversies. The second half of this talk will take a step back and consider the broader implications of these results to our work and our identities as mathematicians. Audience members will be encouraged to share their thoughts and become part of the discussion
